The shorter route on Sunday is for those who want to get an idea of Hydra’s mountain trails but aren’t properly prepared to take part in the longer route. The technical terrain and its altitude, certainly make it extremely interesting and therefore, an authentic trail running route. One of its trademarks is the recurrent ups and downs. .
Distance: 13km with an increasing altitude of 560m.
The starting line will be at the port and the first and last parts of the route are the same as in the long route. The route for 2017 has some changes compared to the first three years in order to achieve a higher quality. It is definitely a mountain trail now, with the altitude reaching 560m in a 13km distance.
Total climb 600 metre
Total descent 558 metre
1st part: Distance 3.890m.
The starting line is on the port. We follow the main cobbled road which takes us up the mountain for the 1st kilometer. The 2nd kilometer, at first, is on an uphill dirt path and then on a rocky path until the windmills. We go downhill for a bit on a path and for the next kilometer we are on a slightly uphill dirt path until the 1st Supply Station. The route until here is the same as the previous years.
2nd part: Distance 4.010m
An uphill path for 770m in a pine tree forest until the point where the longer and shorter routes separate (highest point of the route). The short route continues right on a downhill path until the farmhouse. There, begins an uphill path with an intense slant. At the highest point, we go into the pine tree forest and begin descending. The path requires caution because it’s very technical. We pass the area “kokkina chomata” (red dirt) and exit on a cement road. We go uphill for a few meters until the 2nd Supply Station which has a total distance of 7.900m from the starting point.
3rd part: Distance 2.670m.
At the Supply Station, we change course following the cement road uphill. At the highest point of the road (it is a dirt path for the last meters) we abandon it turning right on a path. A downhill cobbled road follows, which is one of the most beautiful on the island (traditional without mortar) but requires caution. We enter the urban area and follow another cobbled road (parts are cement) which leads to the stone arch bridge by the sea. Right after the bridge, is the 3rd Supply Station. (10.570m total).
4th part: Distance 2.570m.
Perhaps the most beautiful part of the route (same as the long route). We run on a wide cobbled road having the sea on our left side and small islets with chapels. In front of us, is the settlement “Kaminia”, which is particularly graphic. After entering the settlement, we run on a cobbled path crossing its harbor. Then we run between the stone houses and taverns. Approaching the port of Hydra we hear the applause and enter the horseshoe-shaped harbor. Surely, the finishing point will be the most exciting, as all spectators will be cheerfully waiting until the last athlete arrives.
